Areola reduction
Restore the harmony
The strive for harmony is the ultimate goal in every surgery. Whatever the operated area or the type of procedure, I always try to give you a result that not only looks beautiful, but is also in perfect harmony with your body or body part. The same is true for the correction of an enlarged or overstretched areola. A significant discrepancy between the size of the areola and the overal breast volume is not only aesthetically unpleasant, but may also cause discomfort when wearing a bra or a low-cut dress. The size of the areola is equally as important as the position. Perfect harmony can be reached when taking into account both size and position of the areola on the breast. Despite the relative straightforward surgery with short downtime, the impact on your every day life cannot be underestimated.
The essentials
An areola reduction is a procedure to improve the areola size and position in order to restore the complete harmony of the breast.
Several breast changes may lead to an enlarged areola: pregnancy - breast feeding - enlarged breasts - ptotic breasts - stretched skin.
Areola reduction can be performed through one incision at the border between areola and skin. This is barely visible after the healing period.
Reducing an enlarged areola does not only improve the breast aesthetics, but improves the comfort in bras and low-cut dresses as well.
A solitary areola reduction can be performed under local anaesthesia.
Consider a limited downtime with easy dressings.
What is an areola reduction ?
For most women, the ideal areola diameter lies between 38 and 42 millimeters. Many changes to your breast may lead to an overstretched or enlarged areola:
Changes to the areola after pregnancy and breast feeding
Increase in breast volume causing stretch on the areola
Ptotic breast with loss of skin tone and enlargement of the areola
No specific breast change. The areola has always been large.
An enlarged areola is not only aesthetically unpleasant, but may also cause discomfort in certain bra types or dresses. In some cases, the areola may also be too medial (too close to the center of the chest) or too lateral (too wide on the breast). With an areola reduction, I tackle both problems: I reduce the size of the areola to a diameter that is more suitable for your breast size. At the same time, I reposition the areola on the breast to restore the overall harmony. The pre-operative design is very specific to each breast and areola type. I apply a very patient-tailored approach for this type of surgery. However, in every patient I can achieve both surgical goals through one incision. In the end, you will have one fine scar at the border between the areola and the breast skin. This usually heals extremely well and is barely visible after a few months.
During the consultation, I will explain to you the procedure in more detail, with pictures and photographs, as well as which scars to expect and the post-operative care that will be needed. You can expect a limited downtime with light dressings.
An areola reduction not only reduces the areola size, but also repositions it on the breast to recreate perfect breast harmony.
The incision lies exactly on the areola border and is barely visible.
Restored harmony of the areola and the breast
Corrected size, form and shape of the areola
Corrected position of the areola on the breast
Improved fitting inside the bra or a low-cut dress
An areola reduction is one of those surgeries that is fairly straight forward, does not take too much time, can be performed under local anaesthesia, and has an extremely high patient satisfaction rate. You get an immediate result of the performed procedure with minimal downtime. To sum up the benefits:
What are the benefits of an areola reduction ?
Younger looking breast with minimal scars
Minimal downtime
Excellent wound healing
Are you a good candidate for an areola reduction ?
In my experience, most women bring up the issue of an enlarged areola themselves. If you have the feeling that your areola is too large, is visible in clothing, or does not fit the shape and size of your breast, you probably would benefit from this kind of reduction procedure. As in all types of aesthetic surgery, this is a very personal choice. Every woman will decide for themselves what they find okay and what not. According to my experience, you may appreciate an areola reduction in case of:
Disproportionate areola size compared to the overall breast
Areola is visible in clothing or when wearing a bra
Areola is positioned too close to the midline or too far away from it
Significant change of the areola after breast feeding, pregnancy or weight changes
If you recognise some of these signs, I recommend you to plan a consultation in order to see how we can improve your breast aesthetics and bring a positive impact to your life.
